What is today’s panchang?

A panchang gives the five limbs of a day at a place: tithi (the Moon’s phase in steps of 12°), vāra (the weekday from sunrise to sunrise), nakṣatra (the Moon’s lunar mansion), yoga (the sum of Sun and Moon in steps of 13°20′) and karaṇa (half a tithi). Each is taken at local sunrise.

How Patri works it out

  1. Sunrise at your place (the Sun’s upper limb on the horizon, with refraction).
  2. Sun and Moon positions at sunrise from DE440 (sidereal, Lahiri); each limb and when it ends.
  3. The lunar month (amānta and pūrṇimānta) and the Vikram and Śaka years.
